CHIPS

Film Comment

CHIPS designed and developed a new website for Film Comment Magazine, Film at Lincoln Center’s film criticism publication founded in 1962. The magazine launched its first new digital issue in May 2026. New features, interviews, essays, and reviews are published twice a week, building up each new quarterly issue over the course of three months. When an issue closes, it’s filed in a fully searchable, fully tagged, archive alongside every past issue of Film Comment, digital or print. Subscribers get access to print back issues in their original form, presented in a slick new document viewer.

The new logo and display font blends two early versions of the magazine’s nameplate, which was first set in Microgramma before switching to Eurostile a few issues in.

The Film Comment logo is a typeable variable font. The weight of the pipes and spacing around them adjust on the optical size axis, letting the logo and any set type using this style to look good at any size.

The full archive of Film Comment going back to its first issue in 1962 is searchable and filterable. Digital issues show up here when they are complete; the next season’s issue takes over the site homepage.
